Meet this quarter's featured staff person:

Breastfeeding Peer Counselor

What is the best part of your job at WIC?
The best part of my job is helping moms be successful in giving their babies the best. A bonus is getting to see all the babies. It really makes my day when I help a mom breast feed her newborn.

What is your favorite quote?
"If ever there is tomorrow when we're not together...there is something you must always remember. You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is, even if we're apart...I'll always be with you." - Winnie the Pooh. (A.A. Milne)
What is your favorite book to read to children?
The Goodnight Book

Jane's Breastfeeding Tip of the Month:
Skin to skin. It is something so simple and doesn't cost anything. Spending time with your baby in kangaroo care can make a world of difference in breast feeding. .

What does the WIC Lactation Management staff do?

Our lactation management team is made up of five breastfeeding peer counselors who are past or current WIC moms who have successfully breastfed their child/ren for six months or more.  Additionally, WIC has 3 lactation experts on staff known as IBCLCs or International Board Certified Lactation Consultants. These ladies have received specialized education to help our breastfeeding moms overcome any breastfeeding challenge they may face.  Here are some of the services our staff provides:

Provide breastfeeding support to mothers and their partners, infants, children, families, and communities

Empower mothers and families to manage breastfeeding challenges if they arise

Share current and up-to-date information about breastfeeding and its benefits to WIC families and staff

Help WIC clients understand and manage their babies' cues, sleep and crying patterns to achieve successful lactation

What's special about WIC IBCLCs?

WIC Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) have a wide variety of speciality certifications and trainings regarding lactation management.

International Board of Lactation Consultant Certification

IBCLCs are internationally-certified healthcare professionals in the clinical management of breastfeeding and human lactation. They are required to participate in education classes, workshops, or seminars every year to ensure that their certification remains current. This also ensures that our clients, staff, and community can receive the most current, accurate, and beneficial information available about breastfeeding.

WIC Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) are involved in numerous activities throughout Spokane, the state of Washington and even the nation. Here are just a few!

Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BFPC) Program

Just like many of our WIC clients, our BFPCs are moms too! They positively impact our WIC program in so many ways:

  • Listen and encourage moms to breastfeed
  • Help breastfeeding moms reach their goals
  • Troubleshoot breastfeeding challenges
  • Refer WIC clients to IBCLCs
  • Connect WIC moms to other moms and groups

BFPCs also facilitate our program's Breastfeeding Support Groups

Breastfeeding Support Group

Additionally, West Central Community Center (WCCC) also hosts a breastfeeding support group on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.
